Google is regarded as the best Search Engine. Google was founded by two Stanford University students, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, under a project named BackRub. They left the university in 1998. The first staff member on board was Craig Silverstein, now Google's director of technology. After leaving university BackRub soon became Google. Today Google has made a mark in Search Engine Technology. The Google’s crawler-based search provides with accurate and relevant results to search queries. Now Google services are not only in field of Internet Search but also you can locate images, products, cached links, discussions, news information, dictionary definitions, spell checking, street maps and newsgroups.

Yahoo is among the oldest Search Engines known in the market. Yahoo was founded in 1994 by David Filo and Jerry Yang, Stanford Ph.D. students. It started as a hobby but soon became a global brand and revolutionized the way we used to communicate, share and create information. Yahoo moved on to crawler based search in 2002, before that human editors used to categorize web pages. In 2004 Yahoo purchased Overture pay-per-click service, who has purchased Altavista and AlltheWeb. Inktomi’s database was also acquired by Yahoo. Yahoo is renowned for popular shopping search engine and yellow page listings.

AllTheWeb is now a yahoo subsidiary and is commonly regarded a better and purer search than yahoo. AltaVista, born in 1995 and dominated the search engine market before Google was founded in 1998.

AltaVista was once owned by digital, then Compaq, CMGI controlled it briefly before overture took over and eventually becoming part of yahoo

MSN is among the preferred search engines. MSN was previously powered by LookSmart results but now runs on it's own crawler based technology.
